A Guide to Excessive Tyre Wear

If you find your tyres are wearing out quicker than expected it is normally due to one or more of the following.
Number 1 can be overcome fairly easily (a couple of minutes with a pump), unfortunately numbers 2 and 3 are due to wear and tear on the pram and there is no easy cure.

  1. Under inflation: Under-inflated tyres will wear down much quicker than normal. Always ensure your tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure. This should be written on the sidewall of the tyre. On pram tyres it will be about 30p.s.i.
  2. Wobbly Wheels: Not a very technical term but fairly self explainatory. If the wheels are wobbling on the axle the tyres are moving in a "side to side" motion as well as a forward motion so they will wear down much quicker than usual. Unfortunately most pram wheels do not run on ball bearings so cannot be adjusted.
  3. Curved axle: With the amount of weight that prams have to take it is not uncommon, after a period of time, for the axles to bend slightly. This means the wheels are not sitting at 90 degrees to the floor and causes the tyres to "drag" constantly as the wheels rotate. The picture below shows a slightly exaggerated example of this:
